What they’re saying

AeroMetric produced a high accuracy aerial survey for the Illinois Tollway project more efficiently than we would have accomplished with a complete ground survey. Our schedule was accelerated and AeroMetric’s turnaround was excellent—delivering documentation with the precision we anticipated.

Illinois Tollway - High Accuracy Mapping

The Reagan Memorial Tollway is undergoing a congestion relief program that includes rehabilitation and roadway milling and resurfacing. AeroMetric has completed 36 miles of High Accuracy Mapping along a portion of this I-88 highway that runs from Orchard Road to US 251 through DeKalb, Kane and Ogle counties.

AeroMetric served as a consultant to the design engineer, RS&H of Naperville, Illinois. In order to accomplish the program, RS&H design engineers required a high precision base map to prepare their construction documents.

By employing a helicopter mapping solution, AeroMetric offered the team a creative and innovative approach to transportation corridor surveying. Tight and detailed vertical accuracy was the key to the success of the project. AeroMetric used Tuck Mapping Solutions’ state-of-the-art eagleeye® mapping system. This enabled the team to acquire very low altitude, high accuracy LiDAR data sets, topographic maps, 3D planimetric maps and 3-inch resolution digital orthophoto imagery for the entire corridor.

The original contract had a 90 day delivery agreement, from receipt of control. However, once AeroMetric received the control from RH&S' surveyors, expedited delivery was requested. AeroMetric's experience in corridor projects and in-depth understanding of the project’s and client’s needs, allowed us to deliver all data sets within 45 days, halving the delivery time frame and allowing the engineer to meet their fast-track preliminary design schedule.

Conducting the survey from the air enabled the Tollway to avoid traffic disruptions and also ensured the safety of the survey team. In addition, High Accuracy Mapping provided for rapid completion of the work. The use of a helicopter platform enabled the team to capture LiDAR data sets from a low altitude with great precision, effectively replacing the need for traditional field surveying.

This was the first time the Illinois Tollway had used helicopter-based high accuracy mapping LiDAR technology for a corridor survey. AeroMetric's solution provides a template for transportation authorities nationwide to take full advantage of High Accuracy Mapping for their corridors.
