Lake Delton, WI Levee Failure
Following exremely heavy rains in central Wisconsin in late May 2008, the 81-year-old levee that separated Lake Delton, Wisconsin, from the Wisconsin River, was topped by floodwaters. The floodwaters carved a new channel, emptied Lake Delton within a few hours, and cut a county highway along the levee. Five houses were destroyed or severely damaged as the lakeshore was eroded by the racing waters exiting the lake 40 feet below.
Within four days, AeroMetric was tasked under an existing Indefinite Delivery-Indefinite Quantity (IDIQ) contract with the US Geological Survey (USGS) to acquire Digital Mapping Camera (DMC) imagery and Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) topographic data to aid in the recovery operation. In order to provide deliverables rapidly, it was necessary for AeroMetric surveyors to collect ground-based Global Positioning System data simultaneously while flight crews were collecting digital imagery and LiDAR data.
Digital orthos were delivered to USGS for distribution to other emergency response agencies within 48 hours of image acquisition.
