San Antonio International Airport

AeroMetric was selected as a subconsultant to AECOM for the preparation of an airport master plan update for San Antonio International Airport (SAT). This update will encompass the needs of the airport for the next 40 years, in collaboration with the surrounding communities and the development needs of the area.
Recently, an AGIS and eALP were added to the scope of services for the master plan project.

The three-part analytical process for the master plan will:

  • Define the specific needs of the landside, airside, and terminal components of the airport relying on a sophisticated demand-capacity assessment
  • Identify a range of alternative solutions to those needs that addresses the goals and objectives of the city and airport stakeholders and provides the city with a financially feasible development plan
  • Document the findings, relying on a public forum for feedback and consensus building, and disseminate the findings on the airport website

As part of this effort, AECOM is examining the ability of the airport site to serve the region's transportation needs through 2050 because of site constraints imposed by existing development.

Some of the key elements of the plan are:

  • the assessment of the timing and need for a third terminal concourse in light of the demolition of Terminal 2 and the anticipated opening of the new replacement Terminal B in 2011
  • the role of the airport in a comprehensive regional mobility program that seeks multi-modal connectivity between the key economic sectors of the city that are not in proximity to each other or to the primary residential areas
  • integrating the extensive military aviation presence in the region along with the former Kelly Air Force Base, which was conveyed to the city and renamed Port San Antonio

The master plan update will be an 18-month effort scheduled for completion in early 2011.
